Today - 16th October -  is National Burn Awareness Day organised by the Children’s Burns Trust (CBT), a national charity dedicated to providing rehabilitation support for burned and scald injured children and their families. They also undertake prevention and awareness campaigns for which there is little or no national funding.

The focus of this year’s National Burn Awareness Day is the SafeTea Campaign which aims to prevent serious burns (scalds) from mugs of hot tea or coffee in the home and workplace and to ensure that parents/carers and work colleagues know how to give burns first aid.

A burn injury is for life. The scars are physical as well as psychological and can present life-long challenges for the individual and their families. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable and the majority of injuries occur as a result of an accident that could so easily have been prevented.

The most common place of injury is the home for children and the elderly while for adults, it’s the workplace.  Prevention and good first aid are key to reducing the number of burns and scalds occurring each year.

Hot drinks are the most common cause of burns in children. Something as common as a tea or coffee can have devastating effects as babies and toddlers have much thinner skin than adults which means that a hot drink can cause a serious burn, even 30 minutes after it was made . 30 babies and toddlers go to the hospital with a hot drink burn every day.

Fire Depot's Managing Partner, Laurie Pollard said; ‘The Children’s Burns Trust is one of our chosen charities for 2019 and the team have been busy raising money for it throughout the year.   In addition, as a fire safety company highlighting the importance burn prevention is very important to all of us which is why we particularly wanted to show our support for this campaign’.
