Covid 19: Is there a risk to handling packages and other potentially infected surfaces?

Under normal circumstances, many of us receive parcels at home and deliveries at work on a regular basis without even thinking about it.  Whether they come through the post or are delivered by a courier, we aren’t aware of the surfaces these items have touched or where they have been prior to their arrival.

Over the last few days, some of our customers have, quite rightly, asked if they are at risk of contracting the Corona Virus simply by handling our deliveries, both in terms of the packaging and the goods themselves.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) advise that the likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes COVID-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled and exposed to different conditions and temperatures is also low.

Studies suggest that Corona viruses (including the available preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions, for example depending on the type of surface, temperature or the humidity of the environment.

We would therefore advise that if you think a surface such as a fire extinguisher may be infected, you clean it with simple disinfectant to kill the virus and protect yourself and others and then clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. And avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose of course.
